Fast, free confidential screening offered on National HIV Testing Day

For immediate release

Fort Wayne (June 25, 2025) – Free, confidential screening for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on National HIV Testing Day – Friday, June 27.

Allen County Department of Health staff will provide testing for HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) at Walgreens, 110 E. Creighton Ave. (corner of East Creighton and South Calhoun Street). Rapid syphilis testing also will be available to those at risk.

No appointment is necessary.

“Many sexually transmitted infections can be present, even without symptoms,” HIV/STD Prevention Director Kathy Thornson said. “Testing is quick, and it’s easy. It’s also a first step toward living a healthy life and stopping the spread of disease.”

HIV tests require a quick finger-stick and a drop of blood. Results are available in about a minute. Results from tests for HCV are available in approximately 20 minutes. Syphilis testing results are available in about 10 minutes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends testing as part of routine health screenings, but many people never get tested. More than 1 million people in the U.S. have HIV, the CDC estimates, and many do not know their status.

The Health Department reported 16 cases of HIV in 2024.

The National HIV Testing Day partnership is an ongoing effort among Walgreens, Greater than AIDS, local health departments and HIV/AIDS service organizations to broaden the reach of HIV testing and information in nontraditional settings. The effort also is aimed at helping people understand the latest in prevention, treatment and care.

Other options for confidential HIV testing include:

  • Allen County Department of Health Medical Annex (by appointment) - 4813 New Haven Ave. - (260) 449-7504
