IDEM declares Air Quality Action Days

For immediate release

Fort Wayne (June 7, 2023) – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has issued Air Quality Action Days for today and tomorrow, Thursday, June 8, due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.

High particulate readings exist in Fort Wayne, South Bend, Indianapolis and Muncie in Indiana, IDEM reported.

Air quality may be impacted beyond Thursday, and residents can check smogwatch.IN.gov to view current and forecasted conditions. Questions about air quality or the Air Quality Action Day designations should be directed to IDEM.

Changes in daily habits can reduce fine particles made up of dust, soot and liquid in the air. Allen County residents can:

  • Avoid burning wood in fireplaces or wood-fired boilers; avoid any other unnecessary fires
  • Reduce outdoor activity to reduce unhealthy exposure to fine particles and avoid exercising near busy roads
  • Combine errands into one trip
  • Avoid using gas-powered recreational vehicles
  • Keep your engine tuned, and don’t let your engine idle
  • Conserve energy by turning off lights or setting the thermostat to 70 degrees or lower
