IDEM extends Air Quality Action Day

Fort Wayne (June 8, 2023) – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has issued a statewide Air Quality Action Day for tomorrow, Friday, June 9, due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.

Air quality may be impacted beyond Friday, and residents can check to view current and forecasted conditions. Questions about air quality or the Air Quality Action Day designations should be directed to IDEM.

IDEM had previously designated Air Quality Action Days for Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Changes in daily habits can reduce fine particles made up of dust, soot and liquid in the air. Allen County residents can:

  • Avoid burning wood in fireplaces or wood-fired boilers; avoid any other unnecessary fires
  • Reduce outdoor activity to reduce unhealthy exposure to fine particles and avoid exercising near busy roads
  • Combine errands into one trip
  • Avoid using gas-powered recreational vehicles
  • Keep your engine tuned, and don’t let your engine idle
  • Conserve energy by turning off lights or setting the thermostat to 70 degrees or lower
